Where to eat in Kazan: favorite restaurants and cafes of the city
Rimma Garipova — restaurateur and founder of the WAY restaurant
Rimma has visited almost all the restaurants in the city and shares her favorite gastronomic spots in Kazan. “If I were a tourist in Kazan, I would first of all choose places where I can not just eat, but get to know the culture, history and character of the region, including through the cuisine.”
I would like to start my acquaintance with the Tatar national cuisine. I would definitely visit "Umai" and "Eniy".
Umai uses exclusively local products, the chef prepares dishes from them in Tatar ovens in the restaurant. Here guests can taste koymak, kystybyi, tutyrma, bekken, yuca, echpochmak and much more. The ceremony of the Tatar tea party with an abundance of national pastries and sweets is especially delightful in Umai.
If you are traveling with children, you will enjoy the restaurant "Eniy". Eniy means "mommy" in Tatar. There are paintings of mothers and children in the interior, there is a children's room where nannies work, and dishes from the menu are prepared according to mothers' recipes! The project team visited families where traditional Tatar and family values are preserved and passed down from generation to generation. As part of this project, the brand chef and chefs tasted homemade dishes from different moms and saved their recipes. For example, some dishes from the menu are prepared according to the recipes of the mother of the founder of the restaurant Timur Khairutdinov.
Of course, I cannot ignore the establishment created by my team — the restaurant Way. It is located a stone's throw from the Kremlin. Way — about the new direction of comfort food: clear, hearty and budget dishes in the atmosphere of an elegant restaurant. The basis of our cuisine is local farm products. We make almost everything from them, from pasta with cheeses from local cheese factories to hot tortillas from the oven. Restaurant Way*** is not just about food. Exhibitions of famous artists, interactive events, and tea ceremonies are often held here.
For breakfast, I would choose the cafe Fields or "Morning". Fields is a premium bakery cafe with artisanal production. The cafe serves classic breakfasts and incredibly delicious pastries — I have never eaten croissants better than in Fields. Here, first of all, I appreciate the service — it is really excellent. Cafe "Morning" is a bright, lively place with interesting breakfast dishes. And a completely unexpected recommendation from me — try their shawarma, it will definitely surprise you!
For dinner, I would go to the atmospheric ethnobistro "Tales of the Sun" . Food is prepared here only on an open fire, without gas or electric stoves. Some dishes are stewed on fire for 12, 15, and sometimes 24 hours! And their bread is so good that I'm ready to write a separate column about it. It's definitely worth a try.
